#33. STAR / ESTRELLA
I should learn to look at an empty sky / hauria d’aprendre a mirar cap a un cel buit
THE MOST LOVING ONE
Looking up at the stars, I know quite well
That, for all they care, I can go to hell,
But on earth indifference is the least
We have to dread from man or beast.
How should we like it were stars to burn
With a passion for us we could not return?
If equal affection cannot be,
Let the more loving one be me.
Admirer as I think I am
Of stars that do not give a damn,
I cannot, now I see them, say
I missed one terribly all day.
Were all stars to disappear or die,
I should learn to look at an empty sky
And feel its total dark sublime,
Though this might take me a little time.
W. H. Auden
STAR
Stars symbolize the soul and are associated with collective energy: a multiplicity of luminous points perforating the dark immensity of the unconscious. The six-pointed star of Judaism represents the union of soul and matter into two inverted triangles. Black magic uses the reverse pentagram —a five-pointed inverted star— as a symbol of evil. Angels are usually linked to stars, the Apocalypse talks about stars falling from the sky and it is worth remembering that Satan was an angel before its fall. In many ancient cultures the stars represented the souls of the dead. In Kalevala, the epic poem of the Finnish folk tradition, the stars are made from pieces of the cosmic eggshell. Science also uses metaphors to describe the universe, in fact scientific knowledge can be understood as the great metaphor of modern civilizations to explain the world. "We are made of star stuff" is Carl Sagan’s metaphor to say that we are descendants of apes and bacteria, but also of stellar particles: the basic elements of our body are the core of the galaxies.
“In Hitler, every German should have seen his own shadow, his own worst danger. It is everybody’s allotted fate to become conscious of and learn to deal with this shadow. But how could the Germans be expected to understand this, when nobody in the world can understand such a simple truth?”
C.G. Jung
Si no pot haver-hi igual estima,
hauria d’aprendre a mirar cap a un cel buit
i veure en l’absoluta foscor quelcom gloriós
tot i que això em costaria una mica més d’un dia o dos.
W. H. Auden (traducció de David Carabén)
ESTRELLA
